Now Available: Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit Vol. 7!!!

Available at last!  Volume 7 of The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit, collecting more great stories from the archives of Ian McDonald's popular webcomic.

BRING ON THE LADIES! The women of Rothland take center stage in this latest volume, and they’re all ready to show Bruno who’s boss! Whether it’s former fame vampire Ella, Bruno’s cuter-than-cute daughter Delorus, the amorous Xantippa, or feisty sidekick Fiona, they all put Bruno in his place in “Bruno’s Queen”. Later, there’s the distant chimes of wedding bells as some of our “Couples” set themselves up to get hitched! Meanwhile, Bruno’s parents take a trip down a convoluted memory lane. Finally, the Mother Confuser helps Bruno find out whether Ricardo Aisa really is the good kind in “The Good Guy”. To top it all off, you get a peek behind the creative process in “Rough Strips”. Settle in for another wild ride as the women show the men how it’s done, and once again, some of the best comics on the web become some of the funniest comics in self-publishing.

Brutal Blade Vol. 7 is now available in print on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca, and in digital at DriveThru Comics.  Get it now!

Forever Free....

I've only recently discovered the DivShare, the cloud based storage service I used to host the free book "Why Comics?" has shut down.  It's not a huge loss, as I didn't have a lot else stored there, but it would have been nice had they sent out a notice to their subscribers.
In any case, it means I have to redirect readers who might want to snag a copy of the free book, so you'll notice that the sidebar on the left now points to the listing at DriveThru Comics.  You will have to register for a DriveThru account to get the book, but membership is free, and by joining up, you will also get access to the free issue of "The Journals of Simon Pariah", Issue 1A - "A Pair of Boots".
If that's not enough of an incentive, you also get access to all the other free content on DriveThru. I know it's probably not the smartest thing to recommend someone else's books, but I enjoy their content myself, and can't dispute the amount of good work they have on there.  A few recommendations, if I may:

  • Artesia #1 from Archaia Entertainment - the art in this series is just beautiful.
  • Dork Tower #1 from Dork Storm Press - THE comic for gaming geeks, and I just love Jon Kovalic's art.
  • Deadworld Vol. 1 #1 from Caliber - Zombies!  Long before anyone had heard of the Walking Dead, Vince Locke was ruling the zombie genre with this book.
  • Dead Future #1 from Raven Warren Studios - Zombies again! In space no less!  Zombies in space!  What more do you want?

And that's only a small portion of the free books they have available there.  Go grab them all!  Just make sure to read ours first!

While it doesn't lead to good fellowship, the situation does make Bruno's daughter even MORE precious! Plus, when Bruno conquers the Seven Deadly Sins, he is immortalized in statuary so that he too towers over the Stuff of Legends! Now Available: The Journals of Simon Pariah #2!

"The Journals of Simon Pariah" #2 is available today in print from Amazon and in digital form from DriveThru Comics!
This issue is set in Scotland in the early 17th Century, as Simon has an encounter with ancient forces in the person of a strange red-haired woman and the powers at her command.  Simon Pariah must stand in the teeth of the wind and face "The Hounds of the Forest"!

This story is one of the original stories run at the old Comic Genesis website, wrapped in a redrawn cover and slightly edited for this version, along with a bibliography (!) and several pages of sketches and notes from the development of the story.
It was partly inspired by the film "Braveheart" and the legend of William Wallace, and partly from a dream told to me by a friend of mine, who did double duty as the inspiration for the female lead in the story.
It's weird, it's fantastic and it's Simon Pariah all the way!  Check it out today!

No doubt you've had insomnia waiting for the next volume, but you need live in desperation no longer, for here it is! End your misery; make a stand by putting Brutal Blade on your list of needful things!

The stories in this volume are guaranteed to transport you to joyland, from the wastelands of "Castle's Lot" where we meet the dark half of Bruno's favorite author, to "The Lair of Morpheum" where our heroes get snared by the original dream catcher, to "1001", where Bruno must brave the dead zone of dietary hell!

Now Available: The Journals of Simon Pariah #1A - Free!

Here's a little something for your to peruse over the holidays.  If you've got a DriveThru Comics account, or are willing to get one, you can now get "The Journals of Simon Pariah" #1A free.
Why #1A?  Well, because this is not a full issue; rather it's a wordless 8 page story I created, partly as an exercise in wordless comics, and partly to develop the idea of "apocryphal" Simon Pariah stories.  Apocryphal stories, in this case, being short pieces that are incidental tales featuring the character that may or may not be part of the "canon" that will be the character's history, and that give me the context to set stories out of continuity or (I hope) to eventually invite other creators to tell their own tales of the character.

Issue #1A contains the story "A Pair of Boots" which originally ran as a webcomic on the Simon Pariah Comic Genesis site.  It's dedicated to Steve Ditko, who inspired the story with his treatment of philosophical elements in works like "Mr. A" and his simplistic yet highly effective art style.

Head over to DriveThru Comics right now and grab a copy.  Then be sure to let me know what you think, either in a review, or in the comments.  Either way, you can't beat the price. Enjoy!

Now Available - The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit Vol. 4 AND Bruno the Bandit: A Card Game!

Looks like Xmas came early! As of today, not only do I bring you the latest volume of The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit, available now in print and digital download formats, but I am proud to announce Ian McDonald's latest creation, "Bruno the Bandit: A Card Game"!

"The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit" Vol. 4 features seven more stories from the webcomics archives of www.brunothebandit.com, featuring some of the finest stories and characters from the comic's history, including Elysia the fame vampire, Eunyce, Warrior Hottie, and Shub-Megawrath, the single mother she-goat with a thousand young!
This issue features a brand new cover by "Thieves & Kings" and "StarDrop" artist extraordinaire, Mark Oakley, as well as a pinup by Weird Tales and Lovecraft Ezine alumnus Steve Santiago.  It's a package I'm proud to present, and one I know you readers (and Brunatics!) will love.
"The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit Vol. 4" is available right now in print from Amazon and digitally from DriveThruComics.  Check it out today!

But that, as they say, is not all!  Launching today only at DriveThruCards.com, we have "Bruno the Bandit:  A Card Game".  It's a fantastic new game, quick to learn and easy to play. Now you can take Bruno beyond the printed page and try your skill against your fellow bandits in this game of loot or be looted.

One night at the Belching Hydra (the seediest and most dangerous watering hole in the kingdom of Rothland) an argument breaks out:  who is the best thief in the land?  You and your fellow crooks make a deal: whoever steals the most valuable loot in one night shall be  declared the greatest thief in Rothland!  But beware:  the Rothland Imperial Guard are on the lookout for criminal activity this night.  Not only that, other Rothland citizens are out and about this eve, and can cause you no end of trouble. Finally, your fellow thieves are not above stealing your ill-gotten gains from you, should you let your guard down.  You will need nerves of steel, dogged determination, and a ruthless streak a mile wide to be crowned Rothland's King (or Queen) of Thieves!

The game includes 85 cards, a downloadable rule book, and even has a code for a free digital copy of the first volume of "Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit". All in all, it's a fantastic deal, and a game so good, it's criminal!
"Bruno the Bandit: A Card Game" is only available at DriveThruCards, so get over there and loot your copy right now!

UPDATE: Here's a photo of a hand from the first copy of the game printed, now proudly owned by Ian McDonald.

Lessons Learned in Self-Publishing: Be Careful What You Wish For

In my opinion, the next best thing to a sale is a review.  I'm always happy to send out a review copy to anyone who writes for a public forum and is interested in reviewing one of the books I publish.  Even better when a reader takes the time, unbidden, to write some helpful comments about something they've read.
So, I was briefly thrilled to check my email this morning and find that someone had both read and reviewed my new book, "The Journals of Simon Pariah" on DriveThruComics.

Very briefly.

Apparently this reviewer was less than thrilled with my book, rating it a mere two stars, an adding the following comments:

"I felt like I had been misled based on what I had read in the description. I thought I would be reading original ideas using past events/figures both real and imagined. This story was basically a retelling of RE Howard's "The Thing in the Crypt" featuring Conan the Barbarian. The author freely admits after the tale his character was inspired by Howard's creations as well as another sword/sorcery author.
The art was good and supported the story but I found the illustration of Wolverine to be unnecessary and detrimental to the feeling of the time period the author was trying to create.

The text could have benefited from a good proofreading. There are numerous grammatical mistakes in punctuation and spelling that could have been caught.

I did like the format. I like comics that are text heavy with fewer illustrations allowing for better fleshed out storytelling.

All in all this might not have been the strongest issue to start the series. Perhaps it might have worked better as a flashback."

 Ouch!

What I'd like to do is go through this review point by point, constructing a good argument to explain how this reader has misunderstood the book, and how what he sees as flaws are the same things I consider strengths.

I'd like to do that, but I won't.

I won't do it because there's nothing to be gained by it.  If I respond to every bit of negative criticism, I'm only going to make myself look worse, and not add anything productive to the conversation.
I also think that no matter how good an argument I construct, I won't change this reader's mind...he's read the book and formed his opinion, and that's that.  Better luck next time.
I won't do it because I think he's right.  At least insofar as to say that his criticism is as valid as anyone's, and whether I agree with him or not, he's got every right to express it.
Finally, and most importantly, I appreciate that this reader took the time to write this review and let me know what he thinks.  It's well written and attempts to be constructive, and balanced with some positive commentary as well.  Whether he enjoyed the book or not, at least he took the time to respond to it, and give me something I can learn from and, hopefully, grow on.  That's worth a lot to me.

The lesson is, if you're looking to get into self-publishing, you'd better grow a thick skin when it comes to reviews.  Not everyone is going to praise your efforts, and people will more quickly jump on the keyboard when they've got something negative to say.  Don't turn every bad review into an argument or it will only weaken you in the eyes of your readership.  Instead, try to appreciate the feedback, learn something from the comments and move on.  That's just one of the ways you grow as a creator.

In the meantime, why don't you try the book for yourself and tell me if you agree with this review?  If you're a blogger/reviewer/journalist, contact me and let me know where you'll be writing your review, and I'll set you up with a comp copy of the book.  Everyone else can grab a copy for under a buck over at DriveThru Comics and then join in the conversation.

Presenting: The Journals of Simon Pariah #1

After a long wait, and a long-traveled road, "The Journals of Simon Pariah" is live and now available on Amazon.
Some readers may remember Simon from his old incarnation at webomics host Keenspace (the files are still up at http://simonpariah.comicgenesis.com for now), or perhaps from my earlier days of trying to get other publishers and distributors interested in the book.  I've been working on this idea for a long time, and although it's been publicly dormant for a few years, I've never let go of it.  More than any other, it's the story that I want to tell and I'm beyond thrilled to finally be able to bring it to the world on my own terms and under my own banner.
For the uninitiated, the book description I've used at Amazon and elsewhere tells you all you need to know for now:

""The Journals of Simon Pariah" visits entries from the career of an immortal adventurer, charting his travels through time and around the world. Encountering figures whose shadows loom large over history and legend, he is sometimes witness, sometimes participant, sometimes prime mover to the events that have shaped our world.
Written and illustrated by Dominic, this book combines a love of classic fantasy, historical fiction and pulp adventure with a Japanese influenced art style in an attempt to make something that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. Won't you join the adventure?"

Further to that, I can tell you that there is an overarching story to the Simon Pariah books that will unfold slowly over time.  In the meantime, the book will be very episodic, with self-contained stories set in various times and places.  The whole thing will make a coherent whole one day, but I'm in no rush to get there.

The book is 28 pages, black and white with a color cover.  Like anything else I publish, it will be done on an "as soon as I can get to it" basis, but I plan to get out several issues a year, so it won't be a glacial pace.  Regarding the first issue, I can tell you that I don't try to hide my influences in this one, and fans of Robert E. Howard's work will find it very interesting.

So....from here it's up to you, the reader.  It's up to you, in large part, to determine how well this book does, and through that how well I do at producing this book.  And the best way you can determine that is by buying the book.  It's available right now in a print edition for $3.99 USD at Amazon, and in a digital edition at DriveThruComics for just 99 cents.  Get out there and give it a try!  Then come back here and drop a comment to let me know what you think of it; I'll be waiting to hear from you.

Now Available - The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit Vol. 3

After a few unexpected delays, "The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit, Vol. 3" is now live.  From the book's description:

"The third time's the charm!  Or so hopes our hero, Bruno the Bandit, in this issue, as he turns on the charm in an attempt to win the lovely Lydia away from the wizard Maledict.  Meanwhile, the demonic Numth'kul sees his troubles increase a thousandfold, and we learn that Elder Gods need love too!  Plus, we're not sure if it serves a purpose clear when Fiona serves up some "Free Will"!

All this and much more, including the Charles Schulz memorial story, "When a God Retires" and several new pages of Bruno pinups from Ian McDonald.  Presenting nine more stories from the archives of Bruno the Bandit (www.brunothebandit.com), this third swing of the Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit continues the tradition of turning some of the best comics on the web into some of the funniest comics in self-publishing. "

This volume has a cover by Sandy Carruthers of "Men in Black" and "Captain Canuck" fame, and aside from the wealth of stories within, contains several new illustrations by Bruno's creator Ian McDonald, as well as guest contributions from Michael DeStasio (whose work was featured in volume 2) and Raven Dominic (who is, only coincidentally, related to the publisher.  Honest.)

Fans of Bruno will be delighted by the stories in this volume, and fans of comics in general should check out Ian's loving tribute to Charles Schulz in "When a God Retires".  As always, there's something for everyone in this book, and at this price, it's a steal even Bruno couldn't pass up.

"The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit Vol. 3" is now available through these online stores:

Print:
Createspace

Digital:
DriveThruComics
Wowio

Coming soon, versions for Kindle and Graphicly.

Now Available - The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit Vol. 2

The second volume of "The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit" is up and running!  From the book's description:

"Bruno the Bandit is at it again! Within these pages is another dozen stories from the long-running webcomic (www.brunothebandit.com) by Ian McDonald. What happens when the outcome of every situation truly depends on the roll of the die? What if Bruno went legit and joined the Rothland Imperial Guard? Who is Sour Ron and what connection does he have to Bruno's past? Most importantly, what is the senses-shattering secret of "The Babe" and what will Bruno do to find out? The answers to these questions and more lie in wait inside! Read on as once again, some of the best comics on the web become some of the funniest comics in self-publishing!

Featuring a fantastic cover by classic Conan artist Geof Isherwood and pinups by a talented roster of independent artists, this second volume is sure to amuse and delight you!"

This volume collects some of my personal favorites of the early stories, including the Bill Watterson inspired "Sour Ron" and "Clonin" in which Bruno meets Rothland's version of a certain fur diaper wearing wilderness-enhanced individual.  In addition, it's got some great new art, not least of which is our cover by legendary Conan artist Geof Isherwood, a new Table of Contents illustration by Ian McDonald himself, and pinups by Mike DeStasio, Mike LeGan, Danos Philopolous and John McDowell, as well as a few spot illustrations by my own industrious self.  It's packed cover to cover with bandit-y goodness and I think Bruno fans old and new will really enjoy it.

"The Brutal Blade of Bruno the Bandit, Vol. 2" is available through these stores right NOW!

Print:
Createspace

Digital:

Distributor Profile: DriveThru Comics

When I first had the idea to do digital distribution for AIM Comics, the first place I thought of was Drive Thru Comics.  They're one of the oldest and most robust download comic shops on the net.  I have long enjoyed their offerings, and find that even browsing the books they have available is a good indicator of what is happening in the indy comics market.

DriveThru makes its books available in convenient pdf format.  While this is not my preferred format (I really do love .cbr and .cbz!), they always have high quality scans and I have yet to meet a device that is not able to handle pdfs, so my own preference is rather subjective.  I find their site very easy to navigate, with lots of graphics and previews as is fitting for what they sell.  Their signup process is as simple as can be and literally takes seconds, while their checkout and download process is just as simple.  They accept Paypal as payment, which is almost a must for anyone doing business on the net today.  The books you purchase remain available to download again at any time through your account history, so you need never be without your library of comics.

DriveThru has a long list of publishers offering titles through their store, from heavy hitters like Heavy Metal and 2000 AD to small independent brands like...well, like AIM Comics.  In addition to the books available for sale, there's also a wide variety of free books to get you started.  Most of their books are a buck or two each, which, compared to retail prices, makes some of this stuff a real steal.
Of course, while you're there, you might also want to check out their other stores, DriveThru RPG and DriveThru Fiction, where you can find, among other things, downloadable game manuals, ebooks and even soundtracks.

If you're new to digital comics, or just haven't tried this particular store yet, I recommend taking a look around DriveThru Comix (starting with our publisher page, of course!) to see what they have available, then signing up for a membership and at least trying out some of their free books to see if you like what they have to offer.  Remember that our own publication, Why Comics?, is one of their free books, and is as good a place to start as any.

There's a lot of debate right now about digital versus printed comics, and while I don't have enough experience in publishing to weigh in strongly for one side or the other, I do know that if digital comics is going to succeed it is going to be through the efforts of well-implemented sites like DriveThru Comics.

We're Live on DriveThru Comics!

AIM Comics is live on DriveThru Comics!  This is just one of the partners we're lining up for digital distribution of our books, and we've kicked off by making "Why Comics?" available from them as a free pdf download.  I've been reading offerings from DriveThru for a couple of years, and I know that they have a great catalog of independent publishers as well as some big names over there, so I'm proud to be able to join their ranks.
Head on over to the AIM Comics page at DriveThru and grab yourself a copy of "Why Comics?" to get a taste of what DriveThru can deliver!
